Family commitments mean that I will almost certainly not be able to make it to Eastercon 2010. This sucks, because a lot of my friends will be there, and because the Radisson is one of the few con hotels I have been to which gives me the feeling that I might actually get a reasonable night's sleep every night. I shall think about an appropriate regional/specialist con to go to instead, but I think that it will again have to be a matter of not making firm plans until very near the actual date. Which in turn means that one of the restrictions will be that I can either be sure of getting a room even if I leave it to the last minute, or can cancel the hotel reservation up until the last minute.
(I'm not releasing my Odyssey room booking and membership just yet -- the former because I need to be sure that my potential sharers have other arrangements, and the latter because even a supporting membership would now cost near what I originally paid for the full membership.)

For any Making Light folk who haven't read it this morning -- Scraps has had what looked initially like another stroke, but was eventually diagnosed as a seizure. This isn't great, but it's a lot better than a stroke.

It's day 15 in the Big Brother house of
picowrimo and I'd only produced 310 words so I decided to celebrate the rebirth of my favourite interwebz den of iniquity scans_daily, nao @ dreamwidth, with a non-drabble. Oddly, if you swap one companion for another then I've written already written a very different version of this crossover for a bet challenge.
Fandom: Doctor Who and DC comics
Characters: Donna, 10, and a guest DC comic hero
Rating: all ages
Spoilers: none
Word count: 155
Warning: bad!fic
A grinding-whirring noise and flashing blue light announced the appearance, on top of the skyscraper, of an unexpected blue box.
A man who wasn't ginger, and a woman who was, emerged from the box to size-up their situation.
The redhead had a no-nonsense glint in her eyes as she addressed the masked man balancing on the edge of the roof with his cape blowing out dramatically behind him, "Look, matey, that mad scientist you're dangling over a long drop is the only person who can diffuse the butterfly-maths-bomb in time so you just hand him over to us and we'll talk him into it."
The bizarrely costumed vigilante, confronted for once with a situation he hadn't anticipated and apparently at a loss for words, eventually exclaimed as if by reflex, "My parents are dead!"
Donna huffed impatiently, "My companion in the shit-brown suit offed his whole planet and everyone on it. That's still no excuse."
Picowrimo wordcount now: 465 (31 words per day!)

I <3 Lev Grossman. In an interview by Zack Smith for Newsarama, he said, of his new book The Magicians, I’m only putting in formally-published form the oldest, most basic tropes of fan fiction.
In Rolling Stone, Rob Sheffield called the album Them Crooked Vultures fan fiction with a classic-rock heart.
On New York Magazine's Vulture blog, Nick Catucci referred to a recent episode of 30 Rock as pure fan fiction, minus the part where he tells her to take off everything but her glasses.
On Examiner, Anthony Strain wrote that a plot element of the 11/09 episode of Gossip Girl has totally been done before, if you count certain kinds of fan fiction.
The (Lewis County, Washington) Chronicle's Carrina Stanton reviewed a Centralia College production of Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead, a [Peanuts] fan fiction by Bert V. Royal.
Neely Tucker's piece on recent pro fanfic continues to bounce around the world.
( In Twilight news… )
Finally, in the Weekly World News, Reginald Cunningham III reported that Joseph Cao, the only Republican to vote for the health care bill, in a particularly embarrassing incident […] accidentally distributed to Congress a copy of his Twilight fan fiction.

rheasilvia: Posting a Fanfic Novel: The "How To"-Poll - In your opinion, what is the best way of posting a very long piece of fanfiction (think novel, 150.000 words or more)? [POLL] -- zvi: Podfic grumblings - Okay, I think we have established that I actually hate it when people put music as an intro or outro of their podfic. -

Okay, seriously?
I don't even know what to think of this commercial, haha. It just sort of makes me wonder what's going on in the writer's head!
Then again, if their only intention is to get people's attention, I guess they've succeeded, haha.

This is random, but I have to say it - I don't particularly think that Misha Collins is attractive at all. No reason, just sometimes I boggle slightly at the amount of people who think he's gorgeous, but to each their own, of course :D He looks too foreboding, actually. Which is funny, because I'm a sucker for dark haired guys - Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Jared Padalecki, Taylor Kitsch... But Misha just doesn't do it for me.
Speaking of Taylor Kitsch, I need to catch up on FNL, I've missed the last couple of episodes. I assume it's been good, though? I'm not sure if some of you are watching it, since it's only DirectTV right now, right?

It's so quiet here on my own! I need to dig out the Christmas decorations and get them up, hehe, to make it seem more holiday-ish. I love this season :D The decorations in the mall are incredibly ugly, but that doesn't mean that I can't have pretty ones myself :D I'm such a sucker for the holiday season. It's funny, because I'm seem to be surrounded by people who aren't - my grandparents weren't - but I love it. It just... It's the one time of the year where more than usual, I stop and think that the world and everything in it are beautiful, and sometimes even peaceful.
Okay, I'll stop rambling about the holidays now, I promise. -g-
Also, pffft, why is 'youknowyoureahoeif' trending on Twitter? I just... Meh. I wish more people than me held with the belief that having sex with lots of people isn't a bad thing, but I've ranted about that before, so!
